A Word of Caution

                                            March 17, 2009

Dear Friends,

Of late, there have been many questions and discussions around town about issues of spiritual and physical integrity and safety, and these matters are quite clearly important and relevant.  It would be impossible to address all of them in any specific or cogent way, and indeed, many that have been addressed in the past may have escaped your notice or been forgotten.  Yet, as your Rav, I am responsible and concerned for your welfare, and must raise a word of caution.

I remind you that there are things that you should be doing to protect yourselves and your family from chas v'shalom suffering through unfortunate, avoidable events in the realm of halachah and in your temporal lives.  While we do have a very capable Vaad HaKashrus in this community, one should not assume that every purveyor of religious needs is qualified or endorsed by community rabbanim.  Whether it is the sofer who writes mezuzos, the attendants who help at a Mikvah, or individuals involved in chinuch or tzedakah, it is incumbent upon each of us to assess the situation, and to ask our Rav or Rebbe for guidance and direction.

Similarly, we should make no assumptions about those who provide us with material services in our homes – be it a janitorial service, a handy man, or a repairman – and we should act with care and scrutiny before allowing these people into our homes, whether or not they appear to be observant Jews.  Some of these individuals may even present a potential danger.  Of course, anyone to whom we entrust the care of our children should be subjected to an even more rigorous examination of references and credentials.

The Rebbetzin and I are available to answer specific questions, provide our insights and generally advise you on what steps you can take to insure your spiritual and physical safety.  I hope and pray that our hishtadlus in this regard, and our bitachon in the chasdei Hashem will merit Hashem's blessing of security and success in serving Him.

Thank you.
